Shock waves and QPOs in 2D rotating accretion flows around black holes

We examine numerically shock waves formed in 2D rotating accretion flows around a stellar‐mass and a supermassive black holes, while taking account of the cooling and heating of the gas and the radiation transport. As the results, we obtain general properties of the shock oscillations and the luminosity behaviors as QPOs independent of the black hole masses.

Non-smooth modelling of billiard- and superbilliard-ball collisions

Abstract A description of billiard-ball collisions using a ‘discontinuous’ model is presented considering a two-step situation corresponding to the ball–ball interaction followed by ball-supporting surface interaction. It is applied to the inelastic impact of a cue ball having arbitrary pivotment and ‘English’ spins against an object ball initially at rest. This formulation provides a simplified approximation to the ‘continuous’ models of impact and considers two different regimes of impact: gross slip, and slip–stick, described in terms of coefficients of friction and restitution. Steady state shocks in accretion disks around a Kerr black hole

Results of numerical simulations of shock solutions in a geometrical thin accretion disk around a Kerr black hole (BH) are presented. Using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique, the influence of the central object is included by means of an effective potential, We first present the theory of standing shock formation in accretion disks around a Kerr black hole, and show that the results of our numerical simulation agree very well with the theoretical results. We find that the shocks in an inviscid flow are very stable. We also remove the ambiguity prevalent regarding the location and stability of shocks in adiabatic flows. QPOs expected in rotating accretion flows around a supermassive black hole

AbstractIt is well known that rotating inviscid accretion flows with adequate injection parameters around black holes could form shock waves close to the black holes, after the flow passes through the outer sonic point and can be virtually stopped by the centrifugal force. We numerically examine such shock waves in 2D accretion flows with 10−5 to 106 Eddington critical accretion rates around a supermassive black hole with 106M⊙. As the results, the luminosities show QPO phenomena with modulations of a factor 2–3 and with quasi-periods of a few to several hours.

Total photoabsorption cross section for4He from 200 to 800 MeV

1997

The total photoabsorption cross section for ${}^{4}$He has been measured for the first time over a wide photon energy range (200 MeV$l~{E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}l~$800 MeV). By using the large acceptance detector DAPHNE at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI microtron in Mainz high precision results with small systematic errors were obtained. This measurement shows that ${}^{4}$He has a behavior similar to heavy nuclei and, in particular, a reduction of the cross section with respect to the lighter nuclei is found for ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}g$600 MeV.

Breaking Symmetry Effects on Heavy Tetraquarks

In this contribution we present symmetry arguments that can be applied to study the stability of four-quark systems with two different masses. The role played by different symmetry breaking effects and the non-Abelian algebra of color forces is discussed in detail. In the particular case of hidden-flavor all-heavy four-quark states, QQ (Q) over bar(Q) over bar, the system becomes unstable for standard color-additive models. Differences and similarities between Qq (Q) over bar(q) over bar and QQ (q) over bar(q) over bar configurations are presented. SATELLITES AROUND MASSIVE GALAXIES SINCE z ∼ 2: CONFRONTING THE MILLENNIUM SIMULATION WITH OBSERVATIONS

Minor merging has been postulated as the most likely evolutionary path to produce the increase in size and mass observed in the massive galaxies since z$\sim$2. In this Letter, we test directly this hypothesis comparing the population of satellites around massive galaxies in cosmological simulations versus the observations. We reply to the comment [Front. Phys. 14(5), 53605 (2019)] by Y. Finkelstein and R. Moreh on our article Front. Phys. 13(1), 138205 (2018). We agree with some of their criticisms about our calculation of the temperature effect on the kinetic energy of hydrogen atoms of supercooled confined water; we also agree with their statement that, in view of the current sensitivity of the technique, possible effects of the liquid-liquid water transition are hardly detected with deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS). However, we disagree with their use of the translational mass ratio of a single water molecule and, in general, with their underestimation of collective effects.

Phytophthora Root and Collar Rot of Paulownia, a New Disease for Europe

Paulownia species are fast growing trees native to China, which are being grown in managed plantings in several European countries for the production of wood and biomasses. In 2018, wilting, stunting, leaf yellowing, and collapse, as a consequence of root and crown rot, were observed in around 40% of trees of a 2-year-old planting of Paulownia elongata × P. fortunei in Calabria (Southern Italy). Two species of Phytophthora were consistently recovered from roots, basal stem bark, and rhizosphere soil of symptomatic trees and were identified as Ph. nicotianae and Ph. palmivora on the basis of both morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS sequences. Physiological,anatomical and biomass partitioning responses to ozone in the Mediterranean endemic plant Lamottea dianae

Ozone effects on the perennial forb Lamottea dianae were studied in an open-top chamber experiment. Ozone was found to induce reductions in CO 2 assimilation and water use efficiency in the leaves of this species. These reductions were mainly related to a decline in the in vivo CO 2 fixation capacity of Rubisco (V c,max), rather than to stomatal limitations or photoinhibitory damage (F v:F m). In addition to chloroplast degeneration, other observed effects were callose accumulation, formation of pectinaceous wart-like cell wall exudates and phloem alterations.
